Brake Control System with Water Cooling

The Eddy Current Brake Control System provides variable DC voltage and current input to an Eddy Current Brake.  

The Eddy Current Brake Control System provides variable DC voltage and current input to an Eddy Current Brake. Braking control is accomplished through the movement of a single drillers control handle, which varies the voltage from -10 Volts (min. output) to 0 Volts (max. out put). The throttle is fail safe. This movement also increases or decreases the level of direct current excitation voltage input to the field coils.

Baylor's air cooled brake controls mount off the rig floor where a controlled atmosphere and reduced vibration increase reliability. The system is designed to operate any of the several Baylor Eddy Current Brakes, except the ECB-15050.

Passive, convection flow cooling eliminates blowers and reduces maintenance to minor, routine checkouts. All Baylor Brake Controls can be adapted to integrate with modern Drawworks Control System to provide Seamless Drilling and Tripping operations.

The Brake control is made up of three major components:

  • SCR Power Controller
  • Intrinsic Safety Barrier
  • Hazardous Area Components

The BC-2025A-H20 is designed to interface with the NOV battery backup system without any modification.

The auxiliary printed circuit board attached to the door of the cabinet provides two functions. It provides circuits to monitor and alarm under certain conditions and LEDs arranged in a mimic panel to show the status of various parts of the Brake Controller.
