In the early days, NOV Tuboscope determined to facilitate a visual inspection, extra steps were needed to clean the inside and outside surfaces of the pipe prior to all visual inspections. Specially designed optical instruments were implemented for the pipe inside surface full length inspection. In the mid 1940's new inspection method was added to drill pipe services, MPI which used flux leakage inconjunction with iron fillings that complimented the visual test.
