• The role of the Internet of Things (IoT) in oil and gas is a topic of great importance as our industry continues to embrace technology and digitalization. Integrating the IoT into a manufacturing plant, though, can present a set of unique challenges, particularly in facilities with aging equipment that predates the advanced sensors and systems that make data collection and management possible. Ashe Menon, Senior Vice President of Global Manufacturing for Grant Prideco, notes that particular roadblocks also include the expense of implementing large-scale solutions and the risk of false alarms leading to costly downtime. Ashe argues that a major culture shift must occur for IoT integration into older plants and manufacturing facilities to be successful; unless treated as a true investment, not a pilot project, such a program will not achieve proper returns in the long term.
