As drilling technologies and applications have evolved, the selection of suitable BHE tools has effectively decreased. Bi-Center bits, once the go-to solution, cannot be run with push-the-bit rotary steerable systems. Pass-through restrictions usually eliminate the use of concentric tools, while the cost and complexity of fixed-cutter underreamers tend to restrict their use to only “high-end” applications.
This only leaves eccentric string reamers, and most of these use a centralizing section, meaning the bit and bottomhole assembly (BHA) used below the tool must be smaller than the pass-through size (e.g., a 6-in. x 7-in. ESR tool must be used with a 4¾-in. bit and BHA).
NOV designed the xCaliper reamer to resolve this situation, creating a string BHE tool using polycrystalline diamond compact (PDC) cutters that could be run with the current bit and BHA economically.
The xCaliper reamer combines NOV’s previous highly successful ESR technology with our wellbore conditioning tool, the Dog Leg Reamer. This combination results in an ESR that has none of the limitations of the alternative BHE tools.
As a custom-designed tool, the xCaliper reamer uses NOV’s proprietary software to maximize performance and enhance efficiency. Multifunctional Advanced Placement Software (MAPS™) ensures optimal placement of the ESR in the drillstring. Meanwhile, advanced cutter placement software confirms the cutters are positioned for optimal cutting efficiency and minimal torque, while being compatible with all of ReedHycalog’s industry-leading grades of PDC cutters.
