The main objective in primary treatment is to remove material that cannot be biologically of chemically treated and are not wanted in the downstream processes, eg heavy materials like grit, sand, stones, rust that are taken out in grit removal stages, and light materials like plastics that are taken out by screens. Not just oils and fats.

Broad term referring to solid or semi solid materials produced during treatment of industrial or municipal wastewater.

Polymer

Polymers in wastewater treatment are used to coagulate solids so they can be removed or dewatered for further treatment.

Solids Reduction

Secondary Treatment

Secondary Treatment

Focus on the removal of organic matter through consumption by microbes. After the organic matter is broken down, an additional settling process removes the majority of remaining solids.

Refers to the action of taking large difficult to treat solids and reducing the size of these particles to be more easily managed in the system.

Aeration

The process of introducing air into the liquid. Air injection increases the oxygen microorganisms need to metabolize, as well as continually mixing the fluid for better contact with the microorganisms.

Nitrification/Denitrification

Nitrification is the microbial process by which ammonia is converted to nitrates. Denitrification is the process by which nitrates are reduced to nitrogen gas.

The final process of removing impurities from the sewage. In many occasions, this would include a disinfection process prior to discharging to the environment.

Once separated from the sewage, the sludge will go through additional steps to remove any remaining water. After the dewatering is complete, the sludge is transferred to the means of disposal.
